Visiting at Other Schools

UMKC Students Visiting at Other Schools

A student who visits at another law school will be required to complete all UMKC degree requirements, even if the entire third year is spent at another institution. For that reason, the courses a student proposes to take while visiting elsewhere must be approved by UMKC in advance. UMKC requirements which cannot be met at another institution, e.g., because a needed course is "closed" or otherwise unavailable, will not be waived.

A grade of "C" or better must be earned in each course in order for credit for that course to transfer back to UMKC. In addition, even though a grade is assigned by the other institution, it will be recorded simply as a "credit" on the student's UMKC transcript, and will not be included in the student's cumulative grade point average.

Students should be aware that scholarships, grants, awards, etc., awarded by UMKC will not transfer to the student's new school.

A student on academic probation may not visit at another school.

Student's Role

A student wanting to visit at another law school must first contact that institution to learn about all of its policies and procedures concerning visiting students. The student must also obtain that school's course descriptions and a schedule of available courses for the semester in question. These will be used by the student to draft and submit a proposed schedule to the Associate Dean for prior approval.

At the conclusion of the semester, it is the student's responsibility to request that a certified transcript of her grades be mailed to UMKC on a timely basis, and follow up to ensure that the task is completed. Transcripts must be mailed by the law school -- not the student -- to:

UMKC School of Law
Attn: Carol Pegues, Records
5100 Rockhill Road
Kansas City, Missouri 64110-2499

Some students will be returning to UMKC for further coursework after visiting at another law school. In such cases, the student is responsible for obtaining all documentation necessary to register for the following semester from Carol Pegues, completing the registration forms, and returning them to UMKC on a timely basis.

Students who visit at another law school -- even in their final semester -- are eligible to participate in all UMKC graduation ceremonies. It is the student's responsibility to obtain, complete and return all appropriate documentation, including:
  • Application to graduate (must be completed and returned before the end of the student's fifth semester) [10]
  • Cap & gown orders
  • Bar applications

Law School's Role

As noted above, the Associate Dean will review and approve visiting course schedules in advance to ensure that the student remains on track to meet all UMKC degree requirements and graduate. This process must be accomplished before the student attempts to enroll at the other institution. Any changes must be approved in advance by the Associate Dean.

At the student's request, the law school will forward copies of registration and graduation materials, as needed.
