Accommodations and Facilities
Accommodations are in the Peking
University-operated Shao Yuan Hotel complex on the campus. Built
in the 1980s and designed specifically for Western students, Shao Yuan
units have "en suite" bathroom facilities and
are air-conditioned. Housing will be double occupancy. A single occupancy
room may be
arranged for a supplemental price of $500 if space is obtainable; please
contact the program program administrator for availability.
The Shao Yuan includes a service center with copy, long-distance phone,
fax, and postal services and a retail store.
Program
activities will be centered on the Beida campus. Classes will be
conducted in the International Center, within easy walking distance of
the hotel.
Optional side trip to
Xi’an
Many students who come to China for our
summer program would like to visit Xi'an and see the terra cotta
soldiers. Xi'an was the capital of China during more centuries than any
other place, and was the capital of the T'ang Dynasty at a time when
China was incontrovertibly the greatest civilization on earth, during
the Dark Ages in Europe. In addition to the 2500 year old Terra Cotta
Soldiers of the Emperor Qin (China's first true Emperor), Xi’an has many
other wonderful sites to see, including the most intact major ancient
city wall in all of China and a spectacular provincial museum. The
Saturday night tourist show is also a delight, and well worth
attending. A Chinese travel agent we've worked with frequently in the
past proposes an optional weekend tour for the second weekend of our
program. Departure will be Friday afternoon, May 23 and return on
Sunday night, May 25. The cost would include round trip air fare from
Beijing, meeting at airport and all transfers and fees, hotel
accommodations (double occupancy), tour admissions, tour bus, tour guide
and most meals. We will need a minimum of ten people to commit to the
Xi’an trip in order to obtain a group rate, with an estimated cost of
less than $500 per person. Please note that the cost of the optional
weekend in Xi’an is in addition to the program fee, and will be payable
separately in China.
