Visiting at UMKC

Visiting at UMKC While Attending Another Law School

Students interested in "visiting at" UMKC should request the following from the Law School:
  • An "Application for Admission by Certification"
  • A class schedule for the semester when the student hopes to begin classes at UMKC.
These may be obtained from the Law School's receptionist; by telephone, (816) 235-1644; by email, PinkmanM@umkc.edu; or by mail. A "letter of good standing" is not necessary because the Dean of the Law School from which the student is visiting must sign the back of the application indicating that a student is in good standing and approving the student's schedule at UMKC.

Course schedules become available in mid-March for the fall semester and mid-October for the winter (spring) semester. Because some courses close during the enrollment process for current students, visiting students should not count on the availability of any particular course required for graduation.

A separate "Application for Admission by Certification" must be submitted for each semester the student plans to study at UMKC. The original [9], fully executed "Application for Admission by Certification" must be submitted to:

UMKC School of Law
Attn: Carol Pegues, Records
5100 Rockhill Road
Kansas City, Missouri 64110-2499

The Associate Dean will process the visiting student application and notify prospective students when a decision has been made.

Students with questions about the status of their applications may contact Carol Pegues in-person, by telephone at (816) 235-1688, or by email at PeguesC@umkc.edu. Additional questions may be directed to Associate Dean Berman in person, by telephone at (816) 235-1640, or by email at BermanJ@umkc.edu.

A student may visit at UMKC during her second or third year. Students planning to visit at UMKC for their final semester(s) should ensure that all of their graduation requirements have already been completed, as many courses "close" during the selection process and, therefore, will not be available to visiting students.

Visiting second-year students may apply to become transfer students following their arrival at UMKC; however, they must follow all the steps outlined above for transfer students in order to become a degree-seeking student at UMKC.

Prospective students are cautioned that admission as a visiting student carries with it no assurance that a subsequent application to transfer to UMKC will be granted, though all such applications are given serious consideration.

Students should be aware that scholarships, grants, etc., awarded by UMKC will not transfer to the student's new school. In addition, visiting students will not receive scholarship assistance at UMKC. At an early juncture, therefore, the student should contact the financial aid offices at both her first law school and UMKC to begin the process of transferring financial aid to UMKC for one or more semesters.

The UMKC Office of Financial Aid may be contacted at:

Mailing Address:
Office of Financial Aid
Attn: Linda Lawrence
University of Missouri at Kansas City
5100 Rockhill Road
Kansas City, MO 64110-2499
Telephone: (816) 235-1236

Email: LawrenceL@umkc.edu

The student should begin investigating the availability of housing in the Kansas City area. Assistance in this regard may be obtained from two offices at UMKC:
