The urban public law school with a small liberal arts feel

Harriet Zimmer Young
Harriet Zimmer Young was the first woman to graduate from the Kansas City School of Law in 1897.
She was in the first class with 57 other students, of which 27 graduated. During the first ten
years of the law school's existence, the law school graduated no more than three women a year.
Her perseverance to graduate at a time when women were largely regarded by society and the law
as property was a great achievement and she opened the path for other strong women. Harriet
went on to be a stenographer, as most female law graduates did at the time. She later was a
teacher at Linwood School in Kansas City.
