EMPLOYER SERVICES
The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law invites you to use the Career Services Office for your attorney hiring
needs. We will work with you to hire law clerks, both during the year and during the summer, new associates and lateral hires.
UMKC Law School has a highly motivated, academically talented student body of approximately 500 J.D. and LL.M. students. The
students consistently distinguish themselves in competition with other schools. The three journals published at the Law School,
the UMKC Law Review, the Urban Lawyer, and the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers provide opportunities
for our students to become excellent writers. Our legal writing program is also first rate; first year law students receive
extensive instruction, often personalized, on legal writing skills.
Here are the ways we can help you: [All listings are free of charge!]
Law Clerks
The Career Services Office will post your job listing for a law clerk at any time. Second and third year students may work
up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full time during the summer. Student can also work following their
first year of law school.
New Associates
UMKC Law School Career Services Office has several services available to assist you in hiring recently graduated attorneys.
The fall on-campus interview program begins in mid-September each year. In addition, you are always welcome to conduct
interviews at the law school at any time throughout the year. We will also post your job listing and law students can
contact you directly. Or, we will collect the resumes of interested students and forward them to you.
Lateral Hires
The Career Services Office publishes a Job Opportunities Bulletin (JOB) on the web. This JOB contains legal job listings
accessed by more than 350 attorneys. Employers listings in the JOB are free of charge. This is an excellent way to receive
resumes from experienced as well as new attorneys. We can also run your job listing as a blind ad and collect resumes
to forward to you.
Contact the Office of Career Services at any time we can assist you with your hiring needs.
PLEASE NOTE:
American Bar Association standards provide that a student may not work in excess of 20 hours per week while attending a
law school on a full-time basis (thirteen or more credit hours per semester). This restriction also applies during
the summer if the student is enrolled for summer session in 5 or more credit hours. Students enrolled in their first
year of law study are strongly encouraged to refrain from outside employment.
AALS Membership Obligation, pursuant to § 6 - 4(b)
In accordance with Section 6 - 4(b) of the Bylaws of the Association of American Law Schools, the University of
Missouri-Kansas City School of Law is committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity for all its students
and graduates, commensurate with their abilities and not limited by invidious discrimination, including discrimination
based on race, sex, age, religion, color, national origin, handicap, disability, sexual orientation, or any basis
forbidden by applicable law or university regulation.
On-Campus Interviews
Advantages of On-Campus Interviewing:
- Many employers tell us that interviewing on-campus is the most cost-efficient method of recruiting.
- Locating and contacting interested, qualified students is facilitated by the Office of Career Services, thus eliminating
time-consuming correspondence.
- Students tend to be more receptive to employers who interview on-campus.
- Private interview rooms are available in the Career Services suite.
- Interviewing proceeds with no distractions or interruptions.
On-Campus Interview Procedures
1. Securing an Interview Date
Complete and return the NALP 2005-2006 Law School Career Services Request Form.
You may obtain the form from our office or
open here.
The Career Services Office will send the employer written confirmation of the arrangements within one week of the initial contact.
2. Providing Informational Material
All employers participating in the On Campus Interview Program are strongly encouraged to provide the following to the CSO as early as possible:
- Resume or description of firm/organization
- Completed National Association for Law Placement
(NALP) Law Firm Questionnaire (available from the CSO
LawFirmForm.pdf )
- Description of available position
- Any brochures or catalogues
These materials generate student interest and enable the students to learn about the nature of the organization and
the employment opportunities it presents. By providing this information, an employer helps to ensure interviews with
prepared, well-informed students.
3. Screening and Scheduling of Students
Resumes of interested students will be sent to the employer approximately two weeks prior to the interview date. The
employer is then provided with a minimum of one week to screen the resumes according to the following policy:
An employer may select enough students to fill 100% of the total interview schedule. The employer is promptly informed
of the additional names. The random selection by the CSO is kept confidential when the interview list is published to
the students.
Example:
- 20 minute interviews
- 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (12:10 - 1:30 lunch, and two 10-minute breaks during the day to "catch up," make phone calls, etc.)
- This schedule allows for a total of 19 interviews per room.
A list of selected students is then posted by the CSO, and these students are instructed to sign up for a time slot. As
soon as the interview schedule is complete, it will be faxed to the employer.
On the interview day, a typed schedule of interviewees is given to the employer. Interviewers are encouraged to use their
best efforts to begin and end each interview at the scheduled time. This is particularly important because the faculty
has imposed a mandatory student attendance policy and has directed the CSO to advise students not to schedule interviews
during class sessions.
4. Exceptions to Procedure
The On Campus Interview Procedure has been put in place to ensure a smooth running process that meets the needs of
both employers and students; however, the CSO will make every attempt to
accommodate employers whose circumstances require a modification of this
procedure.
