___________________________________________________________________ Several online sources, while not containing the full text of compiled legislative histories, provide a listing of the documents that are contained in the legislative history of a particular statute. This listing of documents will provide you with a roadmap to collect the component documents, either online or in print. CONGRESSIONAL UNIVERSE This source is accessible form the law library's home page under Online Subscriptions]. For the component documents of legislative histories for public laws from 1970 to the present click on CIS Index, and then click on "Legislative Histories by Number" or "Legislative Histories." (The later is for keyword searching when you do not know the statute at Large or Public Act number of a particular statute.) For all legislative histories from 1984 forward, there will be hypertext links to CIS abstracts for congressional publications. For public laws enacted prior to 1970, search under 'Cong. Users of this governmental Web site may find the following information as it pertains to a particular Bill: the sponsor(s), cosponsor(s), official short and popular titles, floor/executive actions, the component documents of the legislative history, Congressional Record page references, bill summary, committees of referral, reporting and origin, subcommittees of referral, links to other committee information, amendment descriptions, and links to the full text version of the bill (when available), for legislation starting from the 93rd Congress (1973). LEXIS Law students and faculty with access to LEXIS may use the "US - CIS Legislative Histories" file to obtain the component documents of legislative histories from 1970 to the present as prepared by the Congressional Information Services (CIS). Abstracts of the hearings, reports, prints and other documents cited in the Legislative Histories are also included in the file. WESTLAW Law students and faculty with access to WESTLAW may use the 'LH' Database to find the contents of the legislative history material in USCCAN (United States Code Congressional Administrative News). Coverage of this database begins in 1948. This database contains select House, Senate, and conference reports for each legislative history. Reports not reprinted are cited. However, bills, hearings, congressional debates, committee prints, and related executive materials are neither printed nor cited. Significant dates such as dates of consideration, passage in each chamber of Congress, and approval dates are given. |
