In Westlaw, citation analysis . . . 
  • uses flags to signal how the case has been subsequently treated:
Red Flag   No longer good law for one or more legal points.
Yellow Flag
  Some negative treatment.
Big letter C
  Citing cases, but no negative cases.
Big letter H
  Case has some history.
Green Star
  Indicates levels of treatment of primary case (four stars is the highest)
Purple quotation mark Indicate that the citing document has quoted the primary case
  • must also be considered within the context of time (or the pedigree of judicial precedent):
Tree of case geneology (past and future).
